Hey family, let us keep the conversation going from our latest episode of Perspective. On Episode 20, we laughed, shared, and got real about holiday stress with Isis Jones, Jasmine Stinson, and Councilor Clinton Woods. We covered everything from crazy traditions to overspending, and I want to take a moment to dive deeper into some of those topics with you.

Crazy Christmas Traditions

Remember how we laughed about some of those wild family traditions? Singing off-key carols, elaborate decorating competitions, or just the little quirks that somehow become non-negotiable? The reason these traditions drive us crazy is also why they matter. They are moments we remember and talk about for years. Even if they stress you out, lean into them a little and enjoy the memories.

Overspending and Gift Madness

We also talked about overspending and the scramble for the perfect gift. How often do we get caught up in buying and forget about the joy of giving? That last-minute panic at the store or realizing you got one too many gifts is almost a holiday rite of passage. This year, slow down, focus on meaningful gifts, and laugh at the chaos instead of letting it steal your joy.

Cooking Chaos

The kitchen chaos discussion is still sticking with me. That one family member who wants to control everything or those last-minute requests to cook a dish; we all know them. The takeaway is simple: it is okay to set boundaries and it is okay to delegate. Humor goes a long way, but clear communication keeps everyone from losing their minds.

Kids and Co-Parenting

A serious topic we discussed was co-parenting and who the kids spend Christmas with. With divorced or single parents, communication is key. Are your kids feeling included and loved? Can you let go of control in favor of their happiness? Grace and cooperation can make these moments joyful instead of stressful.

Evaluating Your Year

We also talked about reflecting on your year. Are you feeling like you accomplished enough? Often, we focus on what we did not do and forget to celebrate what we did achieve. Honor your wins, no matter the size. Growth is often in the small consistent steps we take.

Holiday Weight Gain and Family Control

Yes, we laughed about holiday weight gain and that one relative who wants to control everything. These stressors are real, but the key is balance and perspective. Enjoy the food, have fun, and let the control freak have a little space. It will save your energy and your holiday spirit.

Keep the Conversation Going

The podcast was just the start. Take these conversations home. Talk with your family about expectations, check in with your kids, and make time for yourself. Reflect on your year and celebrate the wins. Laugh at the chaos, breathe through the stress, and remember the holidays are about connection, love, and joy, not perfection.

Call To Action

Share this episode with someone who needs a little stress relief or a laugh. Take one small action this week to reduce your holiday stress. Check in on a friend, set a boundary in your family, or take a quiet moment for yourself. Start the conversation, make space for joy, and lean into the love and growth the season can bring.

Continuing the Conversation on Using Your Voice

In this episode of Perspective, I sat down with Ronda Robinson, Tameka Wren, and Brandon McCray to continue our discussion on The Power of Using Your Voice Part 3. With Birmingham’s local mayoral, city council, and school board elections approaching, we focused on why voting matters, why it should never be taken lightly, and how each of us can use our voices to make a real difference.

Voting Is a Right and a Responsibility

Our conversation was a powerful reminder that voting is not just a right, it is a responsibility. It is one of the clearest ways we can actively shape our communities and influence the policies that affect our daily lives. Each guest shared personal experiences about why voting matters to them. Ronda Robinson spoke about how participating in local elections has allowed her to see tangible changes in her neighborhood, from improved city services to stronger school programs. Host, JaPaul, emphasized the importance of educating yourself on the candidates and issues because casting an informed vote is how we honor the power of our voice. Tameka Wren reflected on how her parents instilled in her the value of voting and the responsibility that comes with it. Brandon McCray reminded us that local elections often have the most direct impact on our communities and that skipping them can mean missing an opportunity to shape the environment in which we live, work, and raise our families.

Beyond Casting a Ballot: The Broader Impact

We also discussed the broader significance of voting beyond simply electing officials. Voting is about accountability, representation, and advocacy. When we vote, we signal to our leaders that we are paying attention, that our voices matter, and that we expect them to serve our interests. Every vote contributes to the direction of our city and the well-being of our community. By engaging in the process, we are not only choosing leaders, we are helping to create a culture of participation, civic responsibility, and empowerment.

Every Vote Counts

A recurring theme in our conversation was the idea that no vote is too small to make a difference. Local elections, in particular, can be decided by very few votes, making each voice even more critical. We also reminded listeners that while national elections often get the spotlight, it is in local elections where policy decisions often have the most immediate and visible impact. Whether it is funding for schools, local business development, public safety, or city infrastructure, these decisions shape our neighborhoods and our quality of life.

Your Voice Is Powerful

By the end of our conversation, the message was clear: using your voice through voting is powerful. It is a tangible way to participate in shaping your community and ensuring your values are represented. We encouraged everyone listening to reflect on the importance of their vote, to prepare before election day, and to make a plan to cast their ballot.

Your voice matters. Your vote matters. Do not wait for someone else to make decisions for you. Take the time to educate yourself on the candidates and the issues, engage in conversations with friends and neighbors, and make a commitment to participate. Every election is an opportunity to influence the future of Birmingham. Every vote contributes to the outcome. Step up, show up, and make your voice heard. The power is in your hands.

On Perspective: The Power of Conversation, you know we went deep on Matters Of The Heart. On part two, I had the pleasure of talking with Jasmine Stinson, Deirdre Gaddis, and Harrell Williams, and we got real about mental health—depression, anxiety, self-care, and the importance of speaking up. This episode wasn’t just another conversation; it was a reminder that mental health matters, and no one should have to go through it alone.

Breaking the Silence

One of the first things we tackled was how easy it is to suffer in silence. Too many people feel like asking for help makes them weak. Jasmine, Deirdre, and Harrell reminded us that real strength comes from being honest about what you’re going through. Talking about it is brave. Silence can be deadly.

Understanding What People Go Through

We talked about depression and anxiety and how they can show up in ways that people don’t always see. Someone might seem strong on the outside, but inside, they’re carrying a lot. Harrell pointed out that our fast-paced world often makes it even harder to slow down and really take care of our minds and hearts. The truth is, everyone has a story, and we need to pay attention to the people around us.

The Power of Support

One thing that came up over and over was support systems. Family, friends, therapists, or faith communities; they all matter. Even just one person who truly listens and says, “I see you, and I am here for you,” can make a huge difference. We all need someone to check in with, and we all need to be that person for someone else.

Self-Care Isn’t Selfish

We also talked about self-care, and let me tell you, this is so important. Self-care is more than a trend; it is survival. Whether it’s taking a break, getting some exercise, praying, or just resting, taking care of yourself restores your strength and helps you face life’s challenges with clarity.

Suicide Awareness and Prevention

Our conversation wouldn’t be complete without addressing suicide prevention. We were honest about how real depression can be, and how important it is to watch for warning signs in ourselves and in others. Awareness is key, but action and connection are what save lives. Never underestimate the power of checking in, listening, and offering love.

Strength, Healing, and Freedom

By the end of our chat, one thing was clear; mental illness does not define you. Healing is possible, freedom is real, and strength comes from community. Your heart can carry heavy burdens, but through conversation, support, and self-care, it can heal and thrive.

Let’s Take Action

Here is my challenge to you: reach out. Check on the people you love. Be that safe space for someone else. Share your story. Speak your truth. And if you are struggling, ask for help. You do not have to do this alone. Together, we can make a difference and show the world that mental health matters.
